From Diana’s Desk: My Retirement Announcement

United Way Suncoast CEO announces retirementDear friends,
Late last month I made the official announcement of my plans to retire as CEO of United Way Suncoast in December 2014. The news has already been reported in the Tampa Bay Business Journal, the Tampa Bay Times and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune so you may already be aware.
As the articles indicate, I feel blessed to have spent the past 35 years with United Way, serving as CEO for the last 12. My goal since becoming an ordained minister in 2008 has been to pursue more ministry opportunities, and I believe it is the right time to take this leap of faith and begin a new chapter in my life.

A search committee of board members and volunteers has already been formed and will be led by Gary Sasso, president and CEO of Carlton Fields Jorden Burt and immediate past Chair of the Board for United Way Suncoast.

As the transition and search process evolves, we will share progress with you. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your United Way.

Sincerely,

Diana Baker, President and CEO

On Giving Tuesday, consider giving your time or your money.

On Giving Tuesday, consider giving your
time or your money.

Maybe you’re like my friend who joins her three sisters and their mother for an early breakfast and some shopping every year on Black Friday. Or perhaps you camp out Thanksgiving night so you can be first in line for the best deal on the newest gadget. Maybe you wait until the next day, Small Business Saturday, so you can boost your town’s local economy. You may do what I suspect half the staff at United Way Suncoast does, along with thousands more, and at least sneak a peek at the deals offered online on Cyber Monday, the first Monday after Thanksgiving.

What will you do on Tuesday?

How about joining United Way Suncoast, the Nonprofit Leadership Center of Tampa Bay, the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay and the Florida Suncoast chapter of the Association of Fund Raising Professionals and celebrate Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday is a global movement with local action. It’s a new national day of giving that, following its successful first year – more than 2,500 foundations, corporations and volunteer organizations came together in 50 states last year – Bloomberg News called “the social innovation idea of the year.” With great partners, advisers, and the expertise and global resources of the UN Foundation, this year’s Giving Tuesday looks to be even more impactful. Generosity is a dynamic networking tool, and it is also a great way to get the world a little more connected.

Visit the Tampa Bay Giving Tuesday Facebook page and tell us what you’ll do. You can give, you can volunteer, you can advocate.

And from all of us to all of you, have a safe and happy Thanksgiving enjoying friends, family and maybe a little shopping.

Sincerely,

Diana Baker, President and CEO

Carnival games, a stilt walker, magician and balancing act. These are usually not things you would find at our annual campaign kickoff event but this year that’s exactly what the audience got. More than 500 friends and supporters of United Way Suncoast joined us “Under the Big Trop” for our 2013 Tampa Bay Area Campaign Kickoff.

Vanessa Anderson talks about the rewarding experience of becoming a ReadingPals volunteer.

Vanessa Anderson talks about the rewarding
experience of becoming a ReadingPals volunteer.

Once again, the Tampa Bay Rays hosted us at Tropicana Field for a morning of entertainment, networking and breakfast on the outfield. Guests had the opportunity to hear from our Campaign Cabinet Chair, Steve Mason, as he thanked his fellow cabinet members for their help in advancing United Way’s work and encouraged the audience to continue their support. Vanessa Anderson, a United Way volunteer and advocate shared her experience of becoming a ReadingPals volunteer as one of the most important things she’s ever done. We also had the opportunity to recognize a few of our VIPs in the crowd. We honored our 2013 Campaign Coordinator Hall of Fame Inductee, Cheryl Streb from Carlton Fields as well as our Business Cares Sponsors and top 15 companies.

The morning was a wonderful reminder of the reason we all work so hard to help those in our community. Just as there are a variety of acts in a circus it takes a variety of organizations and individuals to change the story for so many in our region and United Way is honored to have that support. We all should be proud that when it’s time for the lights to come on and the show to start we always come together and do our part to better the lives of those around us. When we work toward a common goal we make significant and life-long change for the children and families in our community.

We are excited to begin what we know will be another successful campaign season and with your support we will continue to change the story in our community.

Sincerely,

Diana Baker, President and CEO

Clear Channel helps change the story. Shown with me are, from left, David Jones, Christina Crane and Pete Norden, our Sarasota Area board chair.

Our Sarasota Area office workplace campaign kickoff was held last month and what a fine affair it was! Our lineup of speakers included Sarasota Area President Katie Knight who described the state of education in Sarasota. She touched on the problem of learning loss experienced by children during the summer and a successful pilot project that helped decrease the “summer slide.” Plans are underway to expand the program to more children next summer. Katie reported on the 20 percent increase in the number of people who used the free tax preparation service last year, helping families keep more of what they earn.

Board Chair Pete Norden of Clear Channel discussed opportunities provided because of the merger of the Sarasota and Tampa Bay Areas. Chief Development Officer Afira DeVries outlined our vision for a community where everyone has a chance to live up to their potential, and Sherriff Tom Knight, our new Sarasota Area campaign chair, explained that he got involved with United Way to help prevent the awful circumstances that land young people in his jails. Parents don’t always have what they need, he said, and he wants to help make more resources available so more children succeed.

Emcees Christina Crane and David Jones from Clear Channel entertained the crowd of 250 who attended the luncheon. Shawnta Pittman, a mother who is determined to make sure her daughter Vivyan has a good education, was a featured guest. Learn more about how United Way is helping Shawnta in the article about Vivyan in this newsletter.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune covered the kickoff in the August 25 edition. I’m grateful to them, to Clear Channel for loaning Christina and David to us, and all the agencies, partners and corporations who turned out to make sure residents are served in the beautiful community of Sarasota.

Sincerely,

Diana Baker, President and CEO

Tom James, center, presents the check to Gary Sasso and me.

You can imagine our surprise  when we received a call some months ago informing us that Katherine Kinnicutt, a Raymond James employee who I did not have the pleasure of knowing personally, had passed away and left her estate to United Way Suncoast. The gift to United Way Suncoast was more than $2 million.

Katherine lived in Safety Harbor and served as Manager of IRA/Qualified Plan Compliance at Raymond James Financial. She worked there for more than 25 years.  She was inspired by the Raymond James’ giving culture and the philanthropic example set by her CEO, Tom James. Katherine was aware that Mr. James was dedicated to the work of United Way and left the vast majority of her estate to United Way Suncoast upon her death in August, 2012.

Her brother Lincoln said his sister lived frugally and saved well. She received assistance from United Way at one point in her life. You can read more about Kathy here.

Tom James, Chairman of Raymond James, presented the check to Gary Sasso, United Way Suncoast board chair, and me, during our July board meeting. The gift, the largest legacy ever made to us from an individual donor, will be contributed to our Endowment Fund, which has been established for philanthropic gifts from both individuals and organizations.  The fund provides the Board of Directors flexibility in making community investments and operational opportunities to secure the future of United Way Suncoast in its four local counties.

Media coverage of the check presentation included Bay News 9, Fox News,  10 News, Tampa Bay Times, the Tampa Bay Business Journal and Tampa Bay Newspapers.

We are humbled and grateful to Tom James and Raymond James for their philanthropic example and to Kathy Kinnicutt for advancing the common good in her community with her generous gift.

dianastoryIt was a star-studded evening in May as we celebrated our ninth Annual Art of Giving. More than 700 of you attended, eager to view our “fashions through the decades” vignettes, relax while having hair and makeup touch-ups, bid on the silent auction items and sample the craft beers, cigars and our special concoction, the Ruby Red Rancic.

I suspect that not a few attended to hear our guest speakers, Giuliana and  Bill Rancic . And they were worth it! I can’t imagine warmer, more genuine stars than those two. Before they took the stage on our behalf, they spoke to students from Operation Graduate – a United Way Suncoast program, in collaboration with the Clearwater Police Department, St. Petersburg College and the Pinellas County School District, that encourages young people to set their sights on education. Giuliana and Bill asked each student about their aspirations and offered advice from their own backgrounds. Both urged the students to get up earlier and work harder than anyone else. Giuliana reminded them that the more you give, the more you get, and Bill suggested they re-engineer themselves by envisioning themselves at 40.

To the audience enjoying dinner in the ballroom at A La Carte, Giuliana and Bill were just as relaxed and sincere as they went through an interview with our star emcees Gayle Sierens and Rod Carter, both of WFLA NewsChannel 8.  They offered fashion advice, discussed how they met, their health issues and how having their son has changed their lives. They encouraged the audience to support education for children – the reason we were all there. Art of Giving is the primary fund-raiser for Summer Care, a United Way program that provides enriching summer child care and financial education to working families in the Bay area.

Our presenting sponsor was Bank of America and we heard from Tampa Bay Market President Bill Goede, who also urged support for children’s education. Publix Super Market Charities was a major supporter as always. Gerdau, Bank of Tampa and Integral Quality Care partners with us as does Neiman Marcus, The Tampa Tribune, NewsChannel 8, Fast Signs, Barefoot Wine and Bubbly and SteinMart. Lyda and Bill Lindell were honorary chairs.

We could not have accomplished what we did without these supporters or without all of you who attended. On behalf of the thousands of children you send to Summer Care, thank you.

If you weren’t able to attend, you can see the pictures here. And if you’d like to contribute to Summer Care, click here.

HandsOn Suncoast volunteers

I’m surrounded by HandOn Suncoast volunteers
on Rebuild Day in Campbell Park.

April is a beautiful month and gives us much to be thankful for. At United Way Suncoast, we’re thankful year ‘round for our supporters and volunteers and in April, we attempted to show them just how much we appreciate them.

Our Sarasota area office thanked our donors at an elegant reception at Michael’s on East. Nearly 150 people listened as Katie Knight, Sarasota area president, thanked them for continuing to support our mission: ensuring more children are ready to learn and succeed in school, helping more families find financial stability and supporting people through crisis. Campaign Chair Charlie Bailey III’s sincerity shone through as he recognized his campaign team and top performers, including FCCI Insurance Group, Sarasota County School Board and Publix.

Charlie’s service to United Way runs in the family. His grandfather was United Way of Sarasota board chair in 1961 and his father Dan, who was in the audience, was board chair in 1988.

During National Volunteer Week in April, we thanked our HandsOn Suncoast volunteers at a dinner held at the Wyndham Westshore in Tampa. NewsChannel 8 anchor Rod Carter, a dedicated United Way volunteer, was our MC and more than 100 attendees cheered on the volunteers, especially Vevelyn Bennett, Tax Site Volunteer Coordinator of the Year; Will Carey, Community Gardens and Hunger Volunteer of the Year; Jake LoBianco, Youth Volunteer of the Year; Cherryl Marlan, Volunteer Leader of the Year; and Diana Nunez, Volunteer of the Year.

We wrapped April up with Rebuild Day in Campbell Park. More than 150 United Way HandsOn Suncoast volunteers joined with partners Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay, the City of St. Petersburg, Honeywell, HSBC, WellCare, PepsiCo and Pinellas County Job Corps to rehabilitate five homes in the Campbell Park neighborhood. United Way has worked in Campbell Park for several years to improve access to education. Rebuild Day is the beginning of a year-long effort in the area to make homes safer, healthier and more energy efficient.

Without our volunteers, without our supporters, none of this would be possible.

SPIRIT OF SUNCOAST AWARDS 2012 REGIONAL BUSINESSES RECOGNIZED FOR PHILANTHROPHIC SUPPORT

American business makes major contributions of treasure, time and talent to nonprofit organizations, and Tampa Bay is no exception. United Way Suncoast recognizes and showcases the spirit of workplace generosity with a unique and special series of awards to highlight the innovative ways companies and workers help the people of Tampa Bay through United Way’s annual Workplace Campaign.

“Throughout the Suncoast region we find some of the most generous people in Florida,” said Diana Baker, President and CEO of United Way Suncoast “and we are blessed to be able to partner with them.” Both major corporations and small businesses continue to prove their leadership in the community by helping others. Our Spirit of Suncoast, Million Dollar Donors and Community Champion awards recognize the bountiful commitments made to United Way; making life better for everyone in our community.”

The Spirit of Suncoast Awards were created to recognize companies that go above and beyond in organizing and energizing fundraising, volunteerism and community engagement at their workplaces.  Recipients demonstrate creativity, enthusiasm, innovative communications and overall participation by management and employees.

Engaging employees creates a connection between the individual worker and the community. By building awareness of the needs of the community, the critical issues facing low-income families, the challenges of education, personal income and health, the employee becomes an advocate for change and a philanthropic partner with United Way.

The Spirit of Suncoast awards are given each year to four companies whose employees exemplify the spirit of giving, advocating and volunteering. Companies are categorized by the size of their workforce.  Criteria for selection include:

  • How the companies communicate the mission, goals and accomplishments of United Way throughout their workforce;
  • How the companies show a spirit of volunteerism in the community, from serving on United Way committees to helping non-profits, schools, and other community organizations;
  • An increase in their overall investment in important programs and projects administered and managed by United Way Suncoast and our partner agencies.
